Energy Bill Shock 2012

As from the 1st January 2012 Victorians now face a surge in electricity prices as power usage climbs to extreme limits amid scorching summer temperatures.

 

A recent analysis by the St Vincent de Paul Society has indicated that average power bills are expected to rise between 5.7 and 8.7 percent. Brace yourself as these price hikes don’t take into consideration the upcoming carbon tax effect which could equate to a further 10% rise come July 2012.

 

Examples of the new price increases, which were passed into law by the Baillieu government, can be seen below.

 

Energy Price Rises from January 1, 2012.
Average Duel fuel per household/per quarter
AGL from $310 to $337 – up $27 (8.7%)
Origin from $299 to $316 – up $17 (5.7%)
TRU from $309 to $336 – up $27 (8.7%)

The findings have also urged St Vincent de Paul’s manager of research ‘Gavin Dufty’ to advise consumers to think about switching energy providers as real savings of up to $200 a year could be made by changing energy retailers.
