Electricity Discounts for Pensioners & Seniors

Did you know that if you have a valid Pensioner Concession Card then you may be eligible for a discount on your electricity bills. Depending on which state you currently reside in and which Concession Card you hold, you could be saving more money on your electricity bills.

Youcompare can also help you save more money on your electricity & gas bills by comparing your most recent bill against the available offers. Compare energy plans or give us a call at 1300 683 009 and one of our energy experts will be able to help you.

Please note that each state does offer their own form of energy discount or rebate deals and they may not apply to all concession card holders.

There are other cards which may also qualify you for an electricity & gas rebate:

  • • Health Care Cards
  • • Veterans’ Affairs Gold Card
  • • Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card (valid in South Australia & Queensland)

NEW SOUTH WALES

In New South Wales, electricity and gas rebates are split into two customer types, depending on your household situation.

  • Retail customers: these are customers who have arranged for their own retail provider to service electricity or gas to their household.
  • On-supply customers: these are customers who receive their electricity or gas bills from an owner or manager of a retirement village, strata scheme or other on-supply residential housings.

Please note that the Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card is NOT eligible for an Electricity or Gas rebate in NSW.

Did you know that if you have not checked your energy bill in the last six months, then you are probably paying too much?

In addition to the Pensioners Discounts for Energy, compare energy plans with us or give us a call at 1300 683 009 and one of our energy experts may be able to help you find a better deal.

Electricity Rebate

If you are a retail customer, the Low Income Household Rebate grants up to $285.00 per year of credit on your energy bills. How much credit you receive over the course of the year depends on when you had applied for the concession.

If you are an on-supply customer, then you will receive a $313.50 lump-sum payment into your bank account.

How Do I Apply for the Rebate?

You will need to ensure that the holder of the Pensioner Concession Card or other equivalent concession cards is also the person who the electricity account is under with your retailer.

If you are a retail customer, then simply give your electricity retailer a phone call, give them your concession card details over the phone and the electricity rebate will be applied to your next bill, if your card details checks out.

If you are an on-supply customer, then simply print and fill out this form, attach a copy of your most recent bill to it and then lodge the application form by post or by emailing it to the email specified on the form. Alternatively, you can also apply online.

Information to Note

  • • If you are switching electricity providers, then let your new providers know that you are receiving an electricity concession so that you can continue to get the rebate.
  • • If you are an on-supply customer, then your meter reading on your most recent energy bill must have been taken after July 1 of the current financial year AND be as recent as 3 months old.

Gas Rebate

If you are a retail customer, then the Gas Rebate grants up to $110 per year as credit on your gas bills. The total amount you will be saving is determined by the day which you apply for the rebate.

If you are an on-supply customer, then you will receive $121 as a lump-sum payment into your bank account.

How Do I Apply for the Rebate?

You will need to ensure that the holder of the Pensioner Concession Card or other equivalent concession cards is also the person who the electricity account is under with your retailer.

If you are a retail customer, then like electricity, just give your gas retailer a phone call, give them your concession details and they will apply the rebate to your gas account.

If you are an on-supply customer OR you buy and refill LPG bottled gas, then you’ll just need to fill out this form, attach your most recent gas bill to it and then you can lodge the application by post or by emailing it to the details specified on the form. Alternatively, you can also apply online

Information to Note

  • • If you are an on-supply customer, then your meter reading on your most recent energy bill must have been taken after July 1 of the current financial year AND be as recent as 3 months old.
  • • If you are an LPG Bottled gas customer, then your most recent purchase must be within the current financial year.
  • • Also keep in mind that the LPG Bottled Gas rebate only applies to bottles that are more than 45kg/88 litres in mass, and the rebate does not apply to “SWAP&GO” bottles.

QUEENSLAND

In Queensland, there are two different energy rebates: the Electricity Rebate and the Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate.

Please note that the Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card is ONLY eligible for the Electricity Rebate and NOT the Gas Rebate in QLD.

Electricity Rebate

The Electricity Rebate grants $340.85 per year (GTS included) in savings on your electricity bills.

How Do I Apply for the Rebate?

You will need to ensure that the holder of the Pensioner Concession Card or other equivalent concession cards is also the person who the electricity account is under with your retailer.

You can apply for the electricity rebate by ringing up your electricity provider and giving them your concession card details over the phone. Alternatively, you can also request for your retailer to send you a form to fill out by mail which you can then lodge by post.

If you live in a multi-residential property, then you can contact the manager or persons who send you the electricity bill and apply for the electricity rebate through them. If you live in regional Queensland and you use Ergon Energy, then they will send you power cards totalled to the value of your rebate.

Information to Note

  • • If you live in a caravan park, apartments or any other form of multi-unit residential building, then you must show that your electricity is paid based on your meter usage.

Gas Rebate

The Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate grants $72.51 per year (GST included) in savings on your gas bills.

How Do I Apply for the Rebate?

You will need to ensure that the holder of the Pensioner Concession Card or other equivalent concession cards is also the person who the electricity account is under with your retailer.

Applying is pretty simple. Just give your gas retailer a phone call and supply them with the details they require from your concession card and your gas bill to apply the rebate to your gas account.

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

In South Australia, things work a little bit differently. For starters, there are two types of energy concessions: Energy Bill Concessions and SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO).

Please note that the Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card MAY BE eligible for the Energy Bill Concessions and the SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO) in SA.

Did you know that if you have not checked your energy bill in the last six months, then you are probably paying too much?

In addition to the Pensioners Discounts for Energy, compare energy plans with us or give us a call at 1300 683 009 and one of our energy experts may be able to help you find a better deal.

Energy Bill Concessions

The Energy Bill Concessions can save you up to $223.01 per year to help cover the costs of both electricity and gas as well as LPG bottled gas. These concessions will be applied to your bill.

If you live in a residential park, you may even be able to apply for the concession that also covers your water and sewerage costs in addition to energy.

How Do I Apply for the Concession?

You will need to ensure that the holder of the Pensioner Concession Card or other equivalent concession cards is also the person who the electricity account is under with your retailer.

Then you can apply through the SA Government website or get them to send you a form to fill out by post.

Information to Note

  • • If you are switching retailers, then note that not all retailers will automatically apply your concession to your new electricity or gas retailer. When you get given your first bill with your new retailer, you can send in the bill by email or post to the emails or address supplied.

SA Concessions Energy Discount Offer (SACEDO)

This concession is available in addition to the Energy Bill Concessions, and it extends only to Origin Energy customers.

Simply, if you already have the Energy Bill Concessions applied and you are an Origin Energy customer, then you can further apply for SACEDO, and possibly save up to $531 per year on your electricity bills.

With SACEDO you can also take up a discounted gas plan as well with Origin Energy, with a guaranteed 11 percent off gas usage and supply charges.

How Do I Apply for the Concession?

You will need to already have the Energy Bill Concessions applied to your electricity and gas accounts AND your electricity must be with Origin Energy.

To apply, complete the SACEDO Application Form.

VICTORIA

In Victoria there are two different forms of energy concession schemes and the schemes service both energy utilities: electricity & gas.

Please note that the Commonwealth Seniors Health Care Card is NOT eligible for an Electricity or Gas rebate in VIC.

Did you know that if you have not checked your energy bill in the last six months, then you are probably paying too much?

In addition to the Pensioners Discounts for Energy, compare energy plans with us or give us a call at 1300 683 009 and one of our energy experts may be able to help you find a better deal.

Electricity Concession

The Annual Electricity Concession grants a 17.5 percent concession on your electricity usage and service costs.

This concession is not applied to the first $171.60 of your annual electricity bill. The concession is applied once the retailer discounts and solar credits are deducted.

How Do I Apply for the Concession?

You will need to ensure that the holder of the Pensioner Concession Card or other equivalent concession cards is also the person who the electricity account is under with your retailer.

Then simply give your electricity retailer a phone call, give them your concession card details over the phone and the electricity rebate will be applied to your next bill, if your card details checks out.

Information to Note

  • • Once approved, the electricity concession will be backdated up to 12 months, or up to your Concession Card’s start date if the card is more recent.
  • • If your household exceeds your yearly electricity bill of over $2,820 from December 1, 2017, then you may be required to fill out an additional form to continue receiving the electricity concession. Your retailer should automatically send you the form in the mail when you reach that threshold.

Gas Concession

The Winter Gas Concession grants a 17.5 percent concession on your gas usage and service costs during the winter periods of May 1 to October 31 every year.

Please note that you will have to apply for this separately from your electricity concession, unless you have the same retailer for both utilities.

This concession is not applied to the first $62.40 of your six-month winter period, and it is applied once the retailer discounts have been deducted.

How Do I Apply for the Concession?

You will need to ensure that the holder of the Pensioner Concession Card or other equivalent concession cards is also the person who the gas account is under with your retailer.

Then simply give your gas retailer a phone call, give them your concession card details over the phone and the gas concession will be applied to your next bill within the winter six-month period, if your card details checks out.

Information to Note

  • • If your household exceeds your winter gas bill of $1,555, then you will need to apply for the Excess Gas Concession instead.
